When Someone Has Just Died

When Someone Has Just Died

We Are Here To Help

Death at Home

When your loved one has died at home, the first thing to do is to call the doctor who is able to issue the medical cause of death certificate. This should be followed by making contact with your chosen Funeral Home who will be able to guide you on the next steps.

Once you are ready, and you have the medical cause of death certificate with you, the Funeral Director is able to visit and collect your loved one to take them to the Funeral Homes’ chapel of rest.

If the death was unexpected you should call the emergency services. In this situation, there is a possibility that the Coroner’s Office may be referred to if the doctor is unable to certify the medical cause of death. It is still worthwhile to make contact with your chosen Funeral Home at an early stage so that some of the arrangements can begin. A member of our team will liaise with the Coroner on your behalf.

Death at a Hospital, Hospice or Care Environment

Most hospitals and hospices have bereavement or family liaison officers. They will offer you emotional support and practical advice about what to do next. They will tell you where the nearest registry office is, so that you can register the death. Once you have called us, we will liaise with the hospital or home to make the necessary arrangements for you. At some point in the next five days you have to register the death, but you can come and see us before that if it’s more convenient.
